Granger goes Geocaching

Published June 13, 2010 by magpieschest

“I’m bored” said Granger.

Immediately,  everyone else reacted in what had become a standard drill.  Blurb hid the matches, Mab removed the sharp cutlery, HP stood there saying “Ooh look Granger, butterflys!”  whilst Andy dialled Frog on his mobile.  Whether it was sad or not, really comes down to your decision… but Andy used the “special” phone and Frog had a special ring attached to it.  Either way, Frog was there ina few minutes.

“He’s bored” said Blurb.  This time though, Frog smiled.  “Granger, we’re going Geocaching.”

“Say what now?  I’m bored, not suicidal!”

Frog explained that he had promised his Scouts that he would find a cache box and set a travel bug free on it’s travels.  Granger decided that whilst he had absolutely NO idea what Frog was talking about, he liked the idea of setting something free, so said he was interested.

Frog got very excited and started to talk about where the travel bug could be set free.  Apparently, Granger discovered, the end of the garden was not suitable.  Frog started up the computer and went to www.geocaching.com. Having logged in, he located two sites that he felt would be of interest – and luckily, weren’t too far from home.  he made a note of the grid location, grabbed a local map plus a few other things, and set off.

“This will be close enough” Frog said, and parked the car.  He switched on his GPS, Granger programmed in the co-ordinates and they were off.  Luckily, Frog parked about 1/2km away from the drop site; so they didn’t have far to walk.  The GPS counted down the metres until it said we were right on top of it.  The clue said an Ivy covered stump and within a few minutes – they found it!

They placed the two Travel Bugs into the cache (Granger was disappointed to see that the “bugs” were in fact dog tags), Frog updated the log book, put the cache back and left it as he found it.

They walked back to the car, a little pleased with themselves.  Frog then set up the co-ordinates for the next cache and they drove off.

The next cache was a much smaller affair – and after much searching – they were unable to locate the small container.  Time was getting on, so Granger and frog decided to call it quits and head home.

Back home, Frog logged back into Geocaching.com.  He logged that he had found one cache – and that he had left the travel bugs there – but he also logged that they were unable to find the other cache.

Although pleased the day had gone well, Frog knew to ask one more question.  “Granger, did you have fun?”  Granger paused, rubbed his chin then replied

“When can we find another one?”
